The Leadership Pinebelt (formerly Leaders For A New Century) is celebrating 22 years of cultivating emerging community leaders who dedicate themselves to the betterment of the Greater Hattiesburg Area of Forrest, Lamar and Perry Counties and its citizens. Each year the program’s steering committee:

Plans and implements the program to educate class members on our area’s diverse economy and its needs

  • Selects and trains 20 individuals in the art of leadership and development of community projects

  • Assesses the program through class evaluations and alumni survey

Goals of the Leadership Pinebelt program are to broaden the base from which emerging leadership comes and to serve as a catalyst for increasing diversity among future leaders.

Group sessions focus on building leadership skills, such as conflict resolution, the power of persuasion, and motivation. Various tours give the participants a better understanding of the position of healthcare, cultural arts, economic development, the military, and industry in the Greater Hattiesburg Area of Forrest, Lamar and Perry Counties. This program is a wonderful opportunity for emerging leaders of the area to capture a deeper understanding of the area's strengths and critical needs.

Nomination forms are sent in January of each year to ADP members and Leadership Alumni. Those nominated submit an application to be reviewed by the Steering Committee. The new class is chosen in February and announced in March. For more information on the Leaders program contact Susan Walker at 601.296.7518 or s.walker@theADP.com.

2010 Leadership Pinebelt Class Projects

GROUP 1 - 911 Safety In Numbers

Group Members: Jeanetta Bennett, E. Hunter Douglas, Josh Duplantis, Matthew Miller, Esp., Kesia Pope, Micah Rehm, Tasha Riley

Project Description:  Group 1 has identified a need in the Palmers Crossing Community to have clear, visible, uniform numbers on each home, assisting police, fire and other emergency responders to accurately locate homes. The group is coordinating with E911 and Emergency Management Services to identify each home in Palmers Crossing, and are purchasing numbers for these houses in the community.  On Saturday, September 11, 2010 the group will host a Community Day in Palmers Crossing where we will provide food and activities fro the kids. During this event we will distribute the numbers for each home, as well as assist homeowners with the installment of the numbers. We are also providing t-shirts to memorialize this event and to help raise awareness of the importance of having correct numbering on all homes.

GROUP 2 - Volunteer House Project - If we build it, they will serve.

Group Members: Stacy Thompson, Christa Rouse Bishop, Rebecca Brown, Ray Coleman Jr, Trenidy Davis, Billy Dorgan Jr., Kristen Frierson

Project Description: Many volunteers cannot make a trip to the Pine Belt because there is no place for them to stay affordably while working to fill community needs. The R3SM Volunteer House, once completed, will sleep up to 60 volunteers that come to Hattiesburg to serve in various housing creation/improvement efforts. Group 2's mission is to renovate the "Innkeeper's Suite" of the Volunteer House including a living room/kitchenette, a bathroom and a bedroom. This suite will then serve as a "showcase" room for R3SM fundraising and volunteer efforts.

GROUP 3 - Celeste Place Park

Group Members: Whitney Keyes, Scott Covington, Jennifer Clark, Jay Hudnall, SherRhonda Gibbs, Anthony Harris

Project Description: Group 3 plans to develop the neighborhood's current green space into a playground and park area fro the residents of Celeste Place - a Hattiesburg Habitat for Humanity neighborhood. The families of the Habitat for Humanity subdivision put a great amount of work and dedication into qualifying for their home. We believe they deserve a place for their children to play safely, father with other neighbors, cook-out or simply relax.
